Preventing Issues during Boiler Startup

Boiler Startup Issues

As they say, it is better to be safe than sorry. Practicing these pre-start checks can greatly minimize potential issues during boiler startup.

You know what they say about assuming, right? It can lead to issues during boiler startup. Not the answer you were expecting? Well, it’s far better to be surprised now than to be surprised when you start up your boiler.

The National Fire Protection Journal (NFPA), reports that catastrophic fires and explosions cause hundreds of millions of dollars in damages every year. However, these figures do not take into account the thousands of smaller events that go unrecorded every year.

Potential Boiler Startup Dangers

As they say, it is better to be safe than sorry. Boiler room accidents can occur at any time. However, practicing these pre-start checks can greatly minimize potential issues during boiler startup.

Follow Manufacturer Recommendations

All boiler manufacturers supply operating manuals with their equipment. Always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations:

  • Keep the boiler room clean
  • Keep the boiler room ventilated
  • Maintain a boiler operation log and maintenance records
  • Keep a check on leakages
  • In case of fire, know where the emergency cut off switch is located

Pre-Start Checks!

Prior to boiler startup, it is important to perform the following:

  • Check that all ventilation and combustion air openings are clear
  • Check boiler water level
  • Ensure all stack dampers are open
  • Inspect wiring
  • Check the boiler for foreign materials
  • Check the furnace and flue passes for fuel accumulation
  • Make sure the manual fuel valves are open

But it was Just Inspected!

Never assume that a boiler is operating properly, even after a quick inspection. These minimal legally mandated inspections are not always as thorough as you would hope. After every repair or a new installation of equipment, make sure a qualified boiler inspector re-inspects the entire system.

Employee Training

An employee training program should be established and maintained. Employee training is an important step in maintaining the safe operation of boiler equipment. Make sure training includes what to do around boilers, how to operate the boiler, and what to do in the event of an emergency.

Establish a Preventive Maintenance Plan

The summer and early fall are good times to accomplish necessary boiler preventive maintenance.
