Crockett Facilities Services Builds on Work with Commercial Market

In the 12.15 issue of ACHR News, the owners of Crockett Facilities Services (CFSI) share the story of their company’s growth and strategies. The husband-and-wife team of Mark Crockett and Cindy Esparza Crockett built CFSI with one simple goal in mind: grow the company into one of the top five mechanical contractors in Washington DC area. Okay, so maybe it wasn’t a simple goal, but the company is well on its way to accomplishing just that, being named a Top 10 Mechanical Contractor by The Washington Business Journal for the past four years, in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014.

CFSI has not only withstood significant change in the industry, but has thrived over the past 15 years. Today, CFSI employs 231 people, owns 19 fleet vehicles, and answers 100-150 service calls daily. Last year (2013) alone, CFSI earned $28.5 million in revenue, the company’s best year to-date. So what is the secret to Crockett’s success? The company expanded its offerings – HVAC repair, installation, and preventive maintenance; data center cooling; energy management; and custodial services – to the commercial market.

“[W]e started performing the same service for commercial clientele, and that’s spurred the largest growth in our company today,” explains Mark Crockett.

About three years ago, roughly 90% of CFSI’s work was in the government market. Today, that number has dropped to 65% as work in the commercial market has increased significantly. By next year, Crockett expects the split to be close to an even 50-50.

“We are changing the mindset of the company,” said Mark Crockett. “We have to think like a commercial property owner. And we have to provide products and services that adhere to the expectations of that commercial property owner, which are quite different from their government counterpart’s expectations.”

This change in mindset has helped CFSI grow into one of the area’s premier commercial HVAC contractors.

“I’m proud of our success and very proud of our employees because we can’t grow if our employees aren’t providing excellent service,” said Cindy Crockett. “That really is the crux of our business. We wouldn’t be here without them.”
