Five Causes of Frozen AC Coils

Frozen AC coils

Frozen AC coils can be a problem any time of year.

Frozen AC coils can be a problem any time of year. Even though it’s only the beginning of spring, it will start to get warmer. Plus. it’s always good to be prepared for the summer. What are some causes of frozen AC coils? In this blog we we will explore five causes of frozen AC coils.

Frozen AC Coils Can Be Caused By the Following

  • Air filters that need cleaning: Remember, excessive heat is probably the first noticeable warning sign something is wrong with your HVAC. One possible cause of this are air filters that need cleaning. Air filters that need cleaning won’t function correctly. Air needs to be circulating to keep the coils from getting too cold.

  • Fans that are broken and blocking airflow: Clean air filters don’t guarantee smooth operation. Broken fans can also block and obstruct airflow. Broken motors and fan blades that need cleaning can contribute to this situation as well. As with the air filters, the condition of the fans matter.

  • Blocked up condensate lines: What do condensate lines do? They provide a draining system for your HVAC. Humidity can cause a moisture build-up, and that moisture needs to be released somehow. Pipes funnel the moisture into nearby floor drains. Clogged pipes can lead to water collecting, and this water collecting near the evaporator coil can cause it to freeze up.

  • Malfunctioning thermostats can freeze AC coils: If a thermostat breaks, its readings can be unpredictable. Unpredictable readings will most likely result in an unpleasant environment. Thus, the HVAC could be overtaxed for too long and wear out. Are you having difficulties maintaining a stable interior temperature? Or do you feel that it is too cold? The most likely possible culprit in this case is a malfunctioning thermostat.
  • Possible refrigerant leaks: Refrigerant is the liquid coolant that your HVAC system needs. It is what runs through the coils, adjusting pressures and temperatures as needed. Leaks will cause loss of pressure. Loss of pressure causes further problems, such as excess heat absorption. If you leave leaking refrigerant lines unrepaired, not only is it harmful for the environment, but in some jurisdictions it can be illegal as well.
